Self Portrait by Pierre Bonnard

One of my favourite artworks at the Art Gallery of NSW is this deceptively simple painting, Self Portrait by Pierre Bonnard, circa 1938 – 1940, located in the 19th and 20th century European galleries on the ground floor.
 
In a room containing the huge and ultra-weird Nude in a Rocking Chair by Picasso, a dreamlike Cezanne and fleshy, crowd-pulling Lucian Freud, the small Bonnard hangs beside a doorway, like a shy guest at a party.
 
Shy but not unaware, he has bathed himself in gold light, drawing me in….to his face…his hands.. so quietly yet powerfully beckoning. It’s no wonder he’s known as the Master of intimacy.
 
Every time I see it, it’s like meeting up with an old friend again.

Size

The price above is for a 42 x 59.4cm portrait (16.5 x 23 inches)….which will fit nicely into a standard (inexpensive) A2 frame, and is large enough to make a bold statement on your wall. Of course, if you’d prefer something smaller or larger, no problem……just message me and I’ll create a separate listing just for you.

Materials

This price is for a painting using highest quality Windsor & Newton acrylic paint on 185gsm Arches watercolour paper. I may also use oils, ink or collage if the composition calls for it. If you would prefer your portrait on a ready-to-hang canvas, I can do a 30 x 40cm canvas at this price. A larger canvas will cost more, naturally. Please message me to discuss.

Style

As you can see, I paint in a wide variety of styles. If there is one painting in particular amongst the examples above that resonates with you, let me know and I’ll be happy to paint you in a similar way.

Make an Offer

The price above is for a portrait created in a similar way to the examples shown, with the same level of detail. If you’d like to make a lower offer, that is absolutely fine. I also love drawing with charcoal, ink, pastels etc. I’m sure we can come to some agreement to enable you to have a portrait you will treasure.

Price includes registered post within Australia
